CSR Initiatives 2018-19:
For the year 2018-19 Company has not made budgetary provision for CSR as there is no mandatorily allocable amount from the average net profit of the proceeding 3 years. However, HLL has continued the CSR projects which were done during the past years.
HLL Lifecare Ltd adopted 2 villages - Karakulam in Thiruvananthapuram in the state of Kerala and Kanagala in Belgaum, Karnataka for improving overall health status by improving the physical infrastructure and promoting healthy behaviours. ‘Health’ is taken as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO – 1948). The programme aims at identifying, developing and implementing need based and local specific public health interventions in both the villages in order to improve the overall community health status. The felt needs of the community under Reproductive and Child Health (RCH), Communicable Diseases (CD) and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) have been elicited through a structured needs assessment study. Tailor made strategies and action plans of the programme have been formulated for each village, based on the findings of the study. Adolescent health, early detection and management of cancers, early detection and management of diabetics, improve sanitation facilities in the villages etc. are the key areas of intervention in the area.
Project is being implemented in the area in association with Local Panchayats, Schools, Primary Health Centre (PHC), Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) and other line departments. A range of tailor made communication activities have been developed and implemented in the area for supplementing project initiatives.
HLL and HLFPPT organised an orientation programme on breast and cervical cancer for women above 30 years from the community on 29th September 2012 at Karakulam PHC Hall. Dr Kalavathi M C, Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram facilitated the session. More than 100 women volunteers and health workers including ANMs, ASHA Workers and Anganwadi workers participated in the programme.

ASHA and Anganwadi workers, under the supervision of Health staff, mobilised women for the camps. Details of the camps conducted are as follows:
Delay in detection of diabetics has been identified as one of the major healthcare issues in Karakulam and Kanagala, during the baseline study. In order to facilitate the timely screening for diabetics, HLL organised a focused campaign in Karakulam and Kanagala villages using a designed Sugar Testing and Review (STAR) Van. Almost 3078 people have been given the opportunity to screen their blood sugar status in Karakulam and another 2027 in Kanagala against a total target of 5000 population. It is found that almost 23% of the people are suspected to have diabetics and they have been counselled to do further confirmatory tests. Almost 78% of the people who attended the camps never had done any testing for detecting their diabetic status.
Improving sanitation facilities in the villages has been a major agenda under the CSR initiatives. HLL constructed 20 toilets in Kanagala and constructed / renovated 15 toilets & urinals in Karakulam Panchayat, based on the need based study. The toilets in Kanagala were constructed in public accessible area and where in Karakulam toilets were constructed and renovated in major Government and Aided schools.
Promoting menstrual hygiene through distribution of sanitary napkins free of cost was one of the key activities under the adolescent health interventions in both the villages. HLL and HLFPPT conducted a training programme for the Health staff and Anganwadi workers, in order to support the field level activities on menstrual hygiene. The programme was conducted in collaboration with Community Medicine Department, Medical College, Thiruvanathapuram, Karakulam PHC and ICDS Karakulam on 15 January 2013. Safe blood donors are the cornerstone of a risk-free and adequate supply of blood and blood products. They are voluntary, non-remunerated and from low-risk populations. Keeping this in mind HLL and HLFPPT partnered with Kerala State AIDS Control Society (KSACS) and State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC) and have initiated an ‘Intensive Campaign for the Promotion of Voluntary Blood Donation in Kerala’ in February 2009. The campaign would help increase Kerala’s Voluntary Blood Donation (VBD) status which was only 27% till 2008 inspite of support from NGOs, service clubs, students’ organisations and individuals. The initiative resulted in VBD rising to the current figure of 75%.
Support was extended by HLL/HLFPPT to Department of Health, Government of Kerala for promotion of VBD by:
Now, Kerala’s status has moved from ‘Low Performing’ to ‘Moderately Performing’ (as per National Aids Control Organisation’s assessment on Kerala VBD) within two years of starting the initiative.
Year | Donation camps | Units of Blood |
---|---|---|
2009-10 | 1,219 | 31,500 |
2010-11 | 1,551 | 50,000 |
2011-12 | 1,333 | 50,264 |
Despite an increase in the number of voluntary blood donors and donor motivator organisations, occasions when blood banks run out of a particular blood group are aplenty. In Thiruvananthapuram district, Government Medical College Hospital, Sree Chitra Thirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology and Regional Cancer Centre account for close to 4500 units per month. Regional Cancer Centre alone needs 1500 units per month. This is where ‘Heartbeats –Thiruvananthapuram’ figures. As a network of voluntary blood donors in the district, facilitated by HLL and HLFPPT, they assist poor and needy patients at government hospitals, especially Regional Cancer Centre. Mr. Adoor Prakash, former Kerala State Health Minister inaugurated the help desk on June 14, 2011.
In 2011-12, under Heartbeats scheme, almost 5161 persons enrolled as voluntary donors. Twenty-six training programmes were held at colleges in Thiruvananthapuram district covering 3697 students. The field level campaign under the programme was implemented with the support of National Service Scheme (NSS) and National Cadet Cops (NCC).
HLL, supported by HLFPPT and leading blood banks, conducted 56 VBD camps in Kerala from 2011-12 which saw 3008 donors. From 2010-11, 20 blood donation camps attracted 1733 donors including 679 females. Educational institutions, NGOs and service clubs were partners to the programme.
HLL, HLFPPT and National Service Scheme (NSS) jointly organised 18 training/orientation programmes for the student-leaders of professional colleges and Arts & Science colleges across Kerala from 2011-12. Around 2847 students from various districts attended. Blood bank medical officers, donor motivators and HLFPPT staff facilitated the sessions.
HLL & HLFPPT conducted 27 sessions on ‘Life-Skills and Goals-setting’ for 10th and 12th standard students of 11 schools in Thiruvananthapuram. A panel of experts from Psychology, Social Work, Student Counseling and Psychiatry facilitated the sessions. A total of 1382 students were covered under the programme in the 2011-12 period.
HLL with the support of Indian Academy of Paediatrics conducted general health check-up for students of Government Lower Primary (LP) School and Government Upper Primary (UP) School in Peroorkada, Thiruvananthapuram, Government LP School near HLL’s Peroorkada factory and Chinnamma Memorial School in Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram. Around 1500 students each have benefited from these camps during 2010-12.
HLL supported Care Plus, an NGO based at Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) in Thiruvananthapuram, for conducting free palliative home care services for poor cancer patients in Thiruvananthapuram district. This involves providing symptomatic care for patients and support for their family members. The Pain and Palliative Care Out-Patient Department of RCC entrusts poor patients who are bedridden to the free Care Plus Service.
Care Plus has a vehicle and a team of experts (doctors, nursing staff and trained volunteers) for supporting patients in Thiruvananthapuram district. Family members are assisted with education and employment. Under Care Plus, each patient is visited by the medical team every 14 days. HLL supported 50 outreach clinics for patients and their family members from 2011-12. An annual get-together of the children of cancer patients is also organised with help from Care Plus.
HLL was able to make a difference in the lives of nearly 12,000 people living in deplorable conditions at Kanagala, a village near the company’s Belgaum unit in Karnataka. The main problems were a lack of adequate water supply and poor sanitation practices. Only 20% people have toilets at their homes with the rest of the villagers taking to open spaces to answer nature’s call. In 2011, HLL constructed a well to help the villagers meet their needs for water. Efforts are on to improve sanitation facilities.
School-going children in the village were given uniforms. HLL’s Belgaum Unit also extended assistance for the medical care of a child accident victim and funded the heart surgery of a villager in Nipani.
The Unit helped a local community organisation set up a Samuday Bhavan for the people of the locality in June 2010.
The employees of Kanagala factory also donated INR 2,00,000 towards Karnataka government’s Calamity Relief Fund in view of the heavy floods which hit the state during October 2009.
